ESTABLISHED 1882
A Legacy of Grace
St Stephen's AME Church in Easton, MD, is a pillar of Unionville, a historic 1800s village founded by Black Union Army veterans. Located at 9473 Unionville Road, the congregation is deeply tied to the end of the Civil War. Following the Civil War, formerly enslaved Black men and free men of color who served in the United States Colored Troops returned to Talbot County. To help them establish their own community, Quaker landowner Ezekiel Cowgill leased 18 parcels of land for just ($1) per month. As part of this cooperative settlement, the residents built St Stephen's AME Church in 1882 to serve as a center of faith and community life. The grounds of St Stephen's serve as a living monument to these founding soldiers. The church's cemetery contains the graves of the 18 original Union Army veterans who founded Unionville. Because of its immense historical value and role in African American history on the Eastern Shore, the site was officially added to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom
